“I Don’t Know What to Do…”
Grief, fear, vulnerability…reactions against brutality and systemic hate…the world is roiling right now. I don’t know what to do about it all, but I do know Tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique). I can teach it to you in about 15 minutes. It is a simple and powerful stress-reduction tool. Our world is in a mess; many tools are needed for the rebuild.
I believe we do need to feel the pain of this time right now, but I don’t think we have to be overwhelmed and immobilized by it.
In my work, I know that our stress-charged emotions are important automatic primal signals to alert us to respond to something really big, important, and scary. And if confronted with a knife-wielding attacker or hungry lioness, we would probably be good as we shifted to either a fight, flight, or freeze response, depending on our level on the food chain.
But there is no hungry lioness from which we can escape if we run, lash out or ignore. There is only pain, and all these emotions and uncertainty. Tapping is a simple strategy to reduce the stranglehold of strong emotions so we can access problem-solving and action as well as emotion.
